Who chopped down the town’s Christmas trees?
Thursday, 12 December 2013
Axminster Town Council has lost two of its three Christmas trees in an apparent chainsaw massacre.
The town council had planned to place the trees inside and outside The Guildhall, but a mystery Christmas scrooge felled the trees, chopped them up and left them in a neat pile for flabbergasted council officials.
The trees were growing on the town council’s allotment site in Woodbury Park.
Tenants wanted them removed, and the timing was perfect as it meant the council would have freeChristmas trees.
The plan seemed to work and one tree was felled and relocated to the edge of South Street car park.
But the town council delegation that came back for the remaining trees last week had a nasty surprise.
Someone had felled the trees and chopped them up for no apparent reason.
It is claimed that some allotment tenants observed two men chopping up the trees on Sunday December 1st.
It is also claimed the allotment holders were told to “mind their own business” when asking the men what they were up to.
Police are investigating and are aware of the witness observations.
Mayor Jeremy Walden described the act as “wanton vandalism”.
He said: “The trees would have been for the good of the town.
“This is wanton and mindless vandalism. The net loss is about £200.”
Town councillor John Jeffery was part of the delegation that made the discovery.
He said: “It is a little bit sad we had to go out and spend money on replacements.
“I can’t understand why they were chopped up.”
Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101. The crime reference is KA/13/648
