OTTERY: Local girl brings Shakespeare home to Cadhay

One of East Devon’s most promising young actors is to bring her one-woman show back home next week, with a special Shakespearian performance at Cadhay in Ottery St Mary. The historic Elizabethan manor will be opening its doors to theatre fans on April 30th as it hosts ‘The Girls of the Globe’ by Natasha Ayton Way. And after sell-out performances at the award-winning Bikeshed Theatre in Exeter earlier this year, Miss Ayton-Way says she is excited to be bringing the show back to East Devon. She said: “With 2014 marking the 450th anniversary of the birth of William Shakespeare, it is apt that a Devon setting, itself steeped in great heritage, should be hosting a modern adaptation of some of the Bard’s most iconic characters. “I am still working on the new show and I have chosen around 15 monologues to perform – but I like them all so at the moment it is proving rather difficult.” Miss Ayton-Way, 20, has been an active member of the National Youth Theatre and took part in the team welcome ceremonies for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Her new show features live musical accompaniment from acclaimed local folk artists Cole Stacey and Joseph O’Keefe, and a ‘Picnic in the Garden’ from 6pm will precede the performance. Miss Ayton-Way added: “To get the opportunity to perform the show at Cadhay is unique and humbling for me.” “I cannot believe I have been so lucky to perform in such nice venues and I cannot wait to bring the show to the grounds of the absolutely stunning Elizabethan manor. “It really is just breath-taking and I only hope I can do the surroundings justice.” The show takes place on Wednesday April 30th at 7pm and tickets, available from Ottery Tourist Information Centre, cost £6.50 to include a glass of wine.
