HONITON: Standards committee role set to be reviewed
Thursday, 06 March 2014
The role of Honiton Town Council’s standards committee is to be reviewed, after some councillors raised their concerns with the current system.
At a meeting of the council’s policy committee last week, Councillor Nick Cornwell said the standards committee was “causing problems”, and agreed to work with Councillor Gary Elliot to review the current code of conduct and terms of reference for the standards committee.
Councillor Vivienne Ash said there had been a “lack of respect” in some recent cases and that there were “internal issues” which the council should find a way of dealing with itself.
Councillor Ash suggested setting up a new system involving a rotating block group of four councillors, which could change from case to case to ensure impartiality.
But Councillor John Zarczynski insisted that the current system was fit for purpose.
He said: “I do not see any need to change – we have a perfectly good system in place and I think we are making changes for the sake of making changes.
“You can solve 80 per cent of problems by getting everyone round a table and talking about it.”
Councillors Elliot and Cornwell will report back to the policy committee at its April meeting.
