COLYTON:Sixth form pupil selected for 10-week expedition
Thursday, 27 February 2014
A SIXTH form student from Colyton Grammar School has been selected to participate in Raleigh International’s 10-week expedition to Costa Rica and Nicaragua this summer.
Raleigh International is a UK-originated youth and sustainable development organisation, whose declared aim is to develop young people who understand sustainable development and have the skills, knowledge and passion to make change happen.
Nicole Thackray, 17, from Budleigh Salterton, will spend her summer holiday working with the local communities and contributing to sustainable development projects.
Projects involve working to provide safe water and sanitation, and helping people understand ways to live and sustain their surrounding environment better.
She will also spend three weeks on environmental work, protecting turtles from poachers in their hatching season and planting new trees in the rainforest.
The final section of the expedition is a three-week adventure across the two countries, walking along beaches, through rainforests and between active volcanoes.
Nicole said: “I am so excited by the prospect of spending my summer in such an amazing part of the world, where I’ll be doing great work for charity and gaining valuable life experiences that will stay with me forever.”
Nicole (pictured above) is currently fundraising for the expedition with support from the school. She will be running cake sales and non-school uniform days, as well as events outside of school.
