SEATON: Surprise Rotary award from Australian club
Friday, 21 February 2014
FORMER president of Seaton Rotary Club, Jean Smith, has been presented with the highest honour for a Rotarian by twin club Illawarra Sunrise in Australia.
Mrs Smith was presented with the Paul Harris Fellowship during her recent visit to Illawarra, near Sydney, for her charity work, in particular her long-term support of the Philippines Project, assisting starving children in the Philippines, as well as Rotary charity ShelterBox.
This year, Mrs Smith, on behalf of the Rotary Club of Seaton, together with a grant from the Rotary District, sent £1,075 to the Philippines Project, which was raised thanks to her hard work and persistence.
Mrs Smith visits Australia every year and, in 2003, visited the local Rotary Club, which later twinned with the Seaton branch in March 2006. She continues to visit the Illawarra club each year to exchange news between the two branches.
President of the Illawarra Sunrise Rotary Club, David Swan, and members Chris Boddington and Wyn Janssen, presented a very surprised Mrs Smith with the Paul Harris Fellowship award – the highest honour in Rotary – during her latest visit.
Mrs Smith said she was “delighted” to receive the award, and did so on behalf of her fellow Rotarians in Seaton.
