COLYTON: Wheelwright awarded for passing on traditional craft
Friday, 21 February 2014
MIKE Rowland & Sons Wheelwrights and Coachbuilders in Colyton has been joined by a young apprentice - the only in the country to be funded by the Livery Council Apprenticeship scheme.
Apprentice George Richards joined the family company in September, attending Exeter College once a week as part of the scheme. His family has a long history of carpentry in Colyton.
Having taken on George and shown commitment to continuing the traditional practice of a wheelwright, Greg Rowland of Colyton was made a Master of the Worshipful Company of Wheelwrights, receiving a certificate from the Lord Mayor of London, Fiona Woolf, at a ceremony in the capital last Monday.
The certificate was presented for “maintaining excellence of the craft” and “mentoring the trade”.
Greg’s father, Mike Rowland, has previously been made an Honourary Yeoman of the Worshipful Company of Wheelwrights - the 68th Livery Company of the City of London - and the Colyton-based business has been given the Royal Warrant.
