SEATON: Flower show is big hit

Thursday, 21 August 2014

FROM six-year-old Tilly Adkin to 91-year-old Eileen Boalch, age was no barrier to success in the 89th annual Beer & Horticultural Society Flower Show at the Mariners’ Hall in Beer. Young Tilly was the proud winner of two cups at the show having taken part in the Lego model, wild flowers and painting on a pebble competitions. That gave her top spot overall in the children’s classes and she lifted the Chambers Cup. Eileen was delight to finish joint first with Bob Passey in the Challenge Cup thanks to her entry of cherry tomatoes, courgettes and runner beans. “It is the first time I have won this cup and I am delighted,” said Eileen. Multiple winner Bob picked up awards in almost 10 classes and was particularly proud of his onions. Another youngster to impress was seven-year-old Sienna Arbourne, who won three prizes for her exceptional miniature garden, vase of flowers and best picture. “The number of entries was slightly down on last year but the quality of the ones we got were very impressive,” said organiser Ursula Makepeace. “I was also delighted to see that we had more visitors to the show than in any previous years, which was very encouraging.” Ann Robinson will remember the 2014 show as it marked her debut and she walked away with the cup for the best lady newcomer. “I have lived in the village for 15 years but this is the first time I have entered the competition and I only finally made up my mind the night before to do the flower arranging,” said Ann.
