SIDMOUTH: Sporting students celebrate results

Friday, 07 February 2014

STUDENTS from Sidmouth College have had a successful half term participating in a number of sporting events.
In January a squad of ten girls from years seven and eight took part in the Lady Taverner’s U13 East Devon Indoor Cricket Tournament held in Exmouth.
Flora Hastie from year eight reports: “Our first match was against Cullompton and resulted in a win which put us through to the semi-finals.
“Here we played Exmouth and gained another convincing win to move through to the final, against Honiton. After a tough game, we were victorious and, as winners of the East Devon tournament, go through to the Devon County Finals in March.
“We were all really pleased with the result and will now be training every Wednesday lunchtime to hone our skills over the coming weeks.”
Thirteen year eight students also took part in the East Devon Indoor Athletics Championships at King’s School at Ottery St Mary and their tremendous performance has secured the team a place at the Devon County Finals at Plymouth in February.
The students each had to compete in six disciplines, with individual performances counting towards the final team result.
Sidmouth came first in the speed bounce, second in four-lap relay, third in the two-lap relay, third in the shot putt, fourth in the standing long jump and fifth in the relay.
The team finished in second place, just four points behind the winners, and are looking forward to the next stage of the competition.
