HONITON: Golf night raises £1,000

Friday, 07 February 2014

Honiton Wine Bar Golf Society’s annual prize giving dinner proved to be full of fun and banter, with trophies awarded and a charity collection passing the £1,000 mark.
Players gathered on Tuesday, January 21st to recognise the winners of the past year’s outings and to relive the great shots and stories.
A final push on the night saw the society’s CLIC Sargent fundraising effort pass the £1,000 mark to reach £1,044.
The charity helps families affected by childhood cancer, and the golfers raised the amount through a series of games, sweepstakes, penalties and a swear-box.
At the dinner, Stuart Walker was recognised as overall winner for 2013.
Daric Jarvis was awarded the AG Sign’s Player of the Year Cup and was also appointed as captain for 2014.
Society member Terry Sharp said: “Additional trophies and celebrations for the worst dress sense, too much talking on the course and the most highly contested ‘booby’ prize were duly awarded and better signify the spirit of the group.”
The golf society is now in its sixth year and plays some of the best local courses during the summer playing season.
Last year’s captain Richard Seymour added: “We are proud to welcome players of all ages and abilities and have an emphasis of fun and enjoyment of the sport for all.
“Anyone interested in joining us should simply ask at Honiton Wine Bar.”
Honiton Wine Bar proprietor Carol Sumner donated a meal for two and a bottle of wine as prizes for the evening’s raffle.
Carole said: “We are still in our first year of owning the wine bar and the golf society epitomises the spirit of the place.
“We offer a warm and friendly welcome to all and are delighted that social groups see us as their home – particularly when such a deserving cause is benefitting too.”
