OTTERY: Festive event is a success

Thursday, 12 December 2013

Organisers of Ottery St Mary’s Festive Fun Day have described the event as a “remarkable” success.
The all-day event, put on by local businesses and the Chamber of Commerce brought the switching on of the Christmas lights and late night shopping together in one occasion, attended by around 2,000 people.
Emily Davis, of Silver Street Tattoos, who helped to organise the day, said: “It was remarkable. We had even more people turn out than we had expected. We literally filled the square. All the windows were done up with some fantastic displays and the lights looked absolutely stunning.”
The switch-on has taken place on a Friday evening in recent years but was moved to the weekend for this year to become part of the town’s all-day event, which featured musical performances throughout the day in the town square.
Organisers hoped the event, in its first year, would encourage shoppers to flock to Ottery for their Christmas gifts, providing a boost to traders in the town.
Mrs Davis added: “All the businesses who participated did a great job of showing off the town. Some of them were not entirely sure whether or not this was going to be a success, but they have stuck with it and hopefully they will get the rewards in the coming weeks.
“We have learned a lot from this year and we will perhaps make some slight adjustments in the future, but we will definitely put it on again. Next year will be bigger and better, but I am looking forward to the 365 days rest in between.”
