Pub chain Wetherspoon completes ‘Star Inn’ deal
Monday, 03 December 2012
Forty new jobs - about 20 of them full-time - will have been created when a new pub opens its doors in Honiton next year.
The news came after it was confirmed that the former Star Inn premises in New Street was bought by the well-known Wetherspoon chain.
It is no secret that the company has had its eyes on the premises for some time.
The last hurdle has now been cleared and a company spokesperson said: “Wetherspoon has today (Nov 27th) completed on the purchase of The Star Inn, Honiton. We now own the site and will open a pub.
“The company has planning and licensing permission. It aims to start building work in December with the aim of opening in March or April 2013.”
The spokesperson stressed the dates could be subject to change, but there will definitely be a pub on the premises again. The Star Inn closed in May 2011 and J D Wetherspoon had been tipped to become the next occupier of the premises ever since.
Planning applications were submitted in January this year, and approved (with conditions) in early May.
J D Wetherspoon has since applied for permission to amend some of the plans, but the general idea is to give the Grade II listed building an external and internal overhaul.
On the issue of jobs, the spokesperson said the company expects to employ 40 people, about half of them full-time, at the pub.
