Paralympic torch visit to Ottery store
Monday, 15 October 2012
OTTERY St Mary’s Sainsbury’s store played host to the Paralympic torch to say thank you for sponsoring this year’s sporting events.
Stores across the country have had the chance to spend an afternoon with the torch as official Olympics partners to say thank you to staff for their hard work in promoting and supporting the Olympics.
Staff and customers were able to get their picture taken with the torch last Friday afternoon, with King’s School students in particular embracing the opportunity.
In the run up to the Olympics, staff in Ottery’s Sainsbury’s store held bake sales and fundraising events to support the Olympics, raising money and awareness for the events.
Staff will now continue to raise awareness, with Sainsbury’s sponsoring the Paralympics sports exclusively right up until the next games in Rio de Janeiro.
As well as welcoming the torch for the afternoon, three staff members from the store also had the chance to take part in the Paralympics “turning the park orange” event, joining with 5000 other Sainsbury’s staff from across the UK to enjoy a day watching Paralympics sport including wheelchair basketball and handball and blind football.
Store Manager Warren Knight said: “It is great for our customers and staff to have a chance to see the torch and get their photo taken with it, after all the promotion for sports and athletics during the run up to the Olympics. It is important to us to encourage sports and healthy lifestyles in our area and it has been a pleasure to support the Olympics this year as well as host the torch to keep the legacy of the games going.”
