HONITON: Marking Mental health week
Thursday, 17 October 2013
Mind East Devon’s Honiton base, The Haven, held an open day on October 8th to mark World Mental Health Week (October 6th-12th).
Support time and recovery co-ordinator Jan Ludwell said before the event: “Part of what Mind as an organisation campaigns for is to breakdown barriers surrounding mental health and raise awareness to stop stigma and discrimination.”
Apart from one-to-one support, Mind also offers a range of group activities including tai chi, pottery, reflexology, art and more.
Mind (Exeter and East Devon) CEO Ruth Wells estimated that about 50 people are helped/supported at The Haven during an average week.
She added: “Everyone is met as an individual and has a support session on a one-to-one basis so that they can identify what recovery would look like to them, and then given the opportunity and choices about how this journey might start. We continue to support them to achieve their goals and aims throughout.”
About the open day, she added: “We let people know we are here for them when they need us.”
In a separate initiative, Thelma Hulbert Gallery is exhibiting work by members of Mind’s Honiton-based art group, which meets booth at The Haven and at the gallery for workshops.
The exhibition runs up to and including Saturday, October 19th.
Anyone interested in finding out more about help and activities on offer should call The Haven on 01404 42343.
