SIDMOUTH: Guides brave the moors to earn badges

Friday, 24 January 2014

IT might be a bit chilly for camping in a tent, but the 1st Sidmouth Guides braved the winter weather recently to stay at Bowerman’s Cottage near Manaton on Dartmoor, to get to grips with map reading and moor walking.
For some of the girls it was their first experience of living away from home for a few days and Pelican Patrol, plus a few others, were using their time to work towards some badges.
The “Finding Your Way Badge” involved map reading and compass work, as well as understanding grid references and keys used on Ordnance Survey maps. The girls new found knowledge was put to the test around Manaton Rocks, as they all embarked on a treasure hunt organised by the Guide leaders.
When not out and about on the moor, their time was spent working towards their “Confectioner’s Badge” which involved making chocolate brownies, fudge and other tasty treats.
All of the Guides said they had a great time hanging out with their friends and learning new things. The only complaint was that they wished it could have been longer!
The Guides meet on Thursday evenings and are always kept busy by the enthusiastic leaders who organise fun activities and games for them. Much of what they do is geared towards their badges, and just before Christmas one guide in particular managed to gain 11 badges between October and December.
Sofia Abrahams, aged 11, said: “My favourite was the ‘Performing Arts Badge’ where I had to learn all about different types of acting and stage make-up, be in a performance, help out backstage and design pantomime costumes.
“The most difficult was probably the ‘Outdoor Pursuits Badge’. We did rock climbing, canoeing and river swimming, and learnt all about being safe and prepared for outdoor activities.”
Sofia also had the honour of being the flag-bearer at the Armistice Day parade, and is looking forward to her next challenge – the World Guiding Badge.
The 1st Sidmouth Guides is looking for energetic and enthusiastic leaders to help out.
