AXMINSTER: Rookie lifeguards rewarded

Friday, 24 January 2014

Four girls are proud holders of the Royal Lifesaving Society (RLSS) Rookie Lifeguard certificate after years of hard work at Flamingo Pool in Axminster.
Niamh German, Millie Debono, Sasha Taylor and Jade Mowlem were presented with their certificates after completing and passing all levels of the RLSS Rookie Lifeguard programme.
The programme demands that three levels of achievement are attained for each of the bronze, silver and gold awards.
It also demands different skills to those that might be used in national curriculum swimming lessons or in a swimming club.
Flamingo Pool spokesperson Dana Haydon-Sycamore said: “The girls have not only learnt to side stroke and lifesaving backstroke, but are also fully conversant in lifesaving techniques such as casualty recognition, different kinds of tows appropriate for both casualties and weather conditions, water defences, assessment of risk and reducing danger to casualties and lifesaver and are fully aware of basic first aid. This provides a thorough grounding for further awards that can be achieved by adults.”
Mark Evans, of Flamingo Pool, added: “We are so proud of all of the girls, and sad that they will not be coming every week.
“Niamh has come a long way with the speed at which she can effect a rescue, Jade is strong and very resourceful, Sasha has come for a quite a while and has shown real commitment and Millie has developed a very effective technique despite having attended for the least amount of time.”
*As previously reported, Flamingo Pool instructors Gareth Parker and Jack Ward were recently awarded the RLSS certificate of merit at the Guildhall in London by ex-Olympian Sharon Davies MBE for their part in delivering the RLSS Rookie Lifeguard programme to such a high standard.
The programme is aimed at those aged 8-12 years.
