SEATON:Locals to get all seven new homes

Tuesday, 15 July 2014

ALL seven new houses being built in Beer will be reserved for local people when they become available later this year. That was the vow of  the Beer Community Land Trust (CLT)  after they secured a late extra £80,000 funding contribution  with spokesman Geoff  Pook saying that none of the properties will now be sold as holiday properties. “This is great news,” said Mr Pook. “None of the houses will have to be sold on the open market thereby safeguarding them for people with local connections living and working in the area.” Originally the CLT were going to retain five of the seven properties for local people with the other two being sold on the open market to part fund the project on the fringe of the village on Quarry Lane. But following further discussions with the Homes & Communities Agency, an extra grant of £80,000 has been awarded on top of their original allocation of £170,000. “We are now able to keep all seven homes for local people,” added Mr Pook. Work, which is being led by Colyton-based Northcott Building Contractors, is currently on schedule and the houses are due to be finished and occupied by Christmas. “It is all going very well,” said Mr Pook. The Beer CLT was set up at the start of last year to facilitate the development of affordable housing for local people with the slogan ‘owned by the community, for the community’. The CLT was granted a £1million loan via East Devon District Council to help fund the project and then  a £170,000 grant from the Homes & Communities Agency.
