Secrecy surrounds plans to turn The Grove Nightclub in Seaton into homes, a gym, dance studios and offices. No planning application has been submitted but plans for the development of the site, a nightclub since the 1970s, are at a relatively advanced stage. County and district councillor Jim Knight is on record saying he has attended a meeting involving EDDC members and officers plus representatives of Axminster Tools and Machinery. An artist’s impression and blueprint lists Devon Contractors Ltd as the client. Devon Contractors Ltd is an Exeter-based construction company, which has worked on projects with Axminster Tools and Machinery in the past. Councillor Knight said that Leisure East Devon (which manages EDDC’s leisure centres) would be involved in the running of the gym, and he added: “I asked if I could take the proposals to the town council, and was told I could because it would give a feel of what people in the town feel.” But information is very hard to come by. When Pulman’s View put it to EDDC on June 27th that EDDC has been in talks Devon Contractors regarding development at The Grove site, a spokesperson said: “I’ve checked again but the answer is the same as before - whatever may or may not be happening at this site, it has nothing to do with EDDC.” A further statement from the EDDC spokesperson said: “It’s always possible (hypothetically) that a would-be developer will have pre-application talks with EDDC and we are not at liberty to disclose whether such talks may have taken place.” The plans have appeared online on town and district councillor Peter Burrows’s website – seatonviews.co.uk But Councillor Burrows said he was unable to discuss the matter. Pulman’s View sought comment from Axminster Tools and Machinery, Devon Contractors and The Grove without success.
