Derek Truesdale presents a cheque for £1,500 to Liz McQueen from the Young Carers charity

Sidmouth Conservative Club’s support for Young Carers (Sidmouth Area), culminated with a £1,500 cheque presentation on Saturday, May 31st. The evening was well attended and chairman Derek Truesdale gave praise to some of the people involved with the fundraising, namely Gina Truesdale for her organising events; David Tuckley for the generous donation of his paintings for the auction night; the Line Dancing Club for cash donations and all the members who attended the various functions supporting this cause throughout the year. The cheque was presented to Liz McQuiston, Young Carers lead practioner for East Devon. Also present to accept the cheque were two young boys – David Luxton, aged 13, and Jamie Luxton, aged 10. David attends Sidmouth College and has managed to win two public speaking competitions as well as caring for his younger brother Jamie. Liz told the club members about the charity and what the money will mean to the youngsters. The charity helps young carers, aged five to 18 years, in the Sidmouth area get the support and help for other family members, either a parent or sibling. Most of these young people have the responsibility of looking after family members, such as feeding, dressing, cleaning the house, making sure medication is taken, which can affect their schooling and other areas of their lives trying to cope with difficult and sometimes complex circumstances. She said: “This money will help with providing respite activities including residential weekends, drop in clubs, school clubs, family support, counselling and provide transport to and from activities. “Thank you so much for your support, it means a lot to us.”
