SEATON: Wild West mystery a real hit

Thursday, 05 June 2014

It was back to the Wild West when Axmouth Children’s Theatre TWO 2011 performed its latest work by local script writer Malcolm Henty. ‘Mama, Don’t Let You Babes Grow Up To Be Cowboys’ is a murder mystery set in the town of Hicksville. Mr Henty said: “The idea was to have as little rehearsal as possible so that the cast had to read from scripts much as you would do if you held a murder mystery at home. The stage was also set ‘in the round' so the audience became an extension of the Silver Bullet Saloon where the action took place. “This was a totally unique experience for the kids being so close up to the audience, but they all coped very well, especially with their accents, and judging from the laughter everyone else seemed to enjoy it as well. “The costumes were all excellent and the clues and props made the scene believable. Everyone played their parts but Stanzi Mai Carpenter, who played Sheriff Doc Holliday in what was probably to be her last performance with the group, was excellent.” The rest of the cast consisted of Beth Wood (Annie Oakley), Callum Wood (Wild Bill Hickok), Shelby West (Belle Starre), Ella Rapley (Poker Alice), Matt Real (Hopalong Cassidy), Alice Price (Calamity Jane), Jessica Spiller (Cattle Kate), Imogen Oldfield (Blaise West) and Euan Hartnell (Wyatt Twerp).
