AXMINSTER: Residents urged to play a part in town’s new neighbourhood plan
Thursday, 05 June 2014
Axminster residents are asked to take an active part in the creation of the town’s Neighbourhood Plan. Neighbourhood Planning is a result of The Localism Act, and local communities are encouraged to produce a Neighbourhood Plan which, if it meets certain criteria, would become part of the Local Plan. As such, it would carry weight in planning decisions affecting the neighbourhood/locality in question. But before being approved, each plan would be subject to an independent examination and local referendum. Axminster Town Council has successfully applied to designate the whole parish as a Neighbourhood Plan area. The next step is to apply for funding (£7,000) from government body My Community Rights to help pay for associated costs with the initial stages. Although the application was in the name of the town council, it is led by Axminster Community Enterprise (ACE), which produced Vision of Axminster (Local Plan) in 2008. Town, district and county councillor Andrew Moulding is a member of both the town council and ACE. He said that a number of focus groups are currently being formed, covering subjects like housing, transport and traffic management, tourism and leisure, town centre and retail, built heritage economy and employment, natural environment. Members of the public are encouraged to get involved, and Mr Moulding said: “It is not just a talking shop, we have a lot of work to do.” The aim is to complete the plan in late 2015 and have it formally approved in early 2016. Anyone interested in getting involved is asked to contact the town council for more information.
