AXMINSTER: Carnival Queen contest on again
Tuesday, 27 May 2014
Axminster Carnival has confirmed it will reintroduce a queen, two princesses and a prince for this year’s showpiece on Saturday September 20th. Candidates are invited for judging in the Guildhall on Monday July 7th. Carnival spokesperson Ron Jones stressed that the judging will not be made by committee members, but by the members of the public who come out to play carnival bingo that evening. As an incentive, the carnival committee has agreed that the interval game will be £100. Axminster hasn’t had a formal carnival queen since 2002 when Jessica Chapple had the role. But a selection of former carnival queens took command of a float in 2012 and last year saw a royal family consisting of former carnival queens’ children. The ambition was to have a full-blown carnival queen competition in 2014, which has now been confirmed. The queen has to be in the 12-17 years age bracket, the prince five to eight years and the princesses either five to eight years or nine to 12 years. Candidates must register with former carnival queen Elaine Voisey (1991 and 1992) on 07968 088 581 before June 30th. Mr Jones invited would-be candidates to “have a go.”
