HONITON: Beehive off to a great start

Wednesday, 21 May 2014

Honiton’s new Beehive Community Centre has made an encouraging start and facilities are being well used, the company directors have revealed. In a report presented to town councillors last week, the directors announced that the café and bar areas have proven “very popular” in addition to the successful staging of events in the main auditorium. Local community groups are also beginning to make use of the centre, with the Community Church holding services and the Honiton Town Band staging rehearsals at the Beehive on a weekly basis. Sixty volunteers have been recruited to help run the café and provide technical and administrative support, and since opening in early April, over 1,000 volunteer hours have been provided to support the launch of the project. Around 600 people attended the three sell-out performances of rock oratorio ‘Christ Crucified’ last month, and the community fair and ‘Big Bash’ events have also helped to showcase the new facility. In the report, the directors said: “The café and bar facilities are being opened to support events and bookings and are both proving very popular, increasing income into the facility. “All fitting out has now been completed with the exception of the cinema equipment and theatre lights, and Friends of the Beehive is actively fundraising for this amount. “Meetings have taken place with the Community Cinema who are moving into the Beehive from July. “Their current programme will run until the new cinema equipment is acquired, when more regular showings will be introduced together with live strea- ming. “Visitors continue to visit the Beehive on a daily basis and all the comments have been positive.”
