SIDMOUTH: Anchor serves the perfect pint

Tuesday, 02 December 2014

A SIDMOUTH pub has been rewarded for serving up some of the finest pints in the country.
The Anchor Inn, on Old Fore Street, topped thousands of competitors nationwide to be named the Best Cask Ale pub by Star Pubs & Bars last week.
Expert judges said the Anchor’s high-quality ale was “spot on” in every category, with members of the panel impressed by taste, temperature and smell.
Licensees Trevor and Denise Fudge, along with their son Matt (all pictured), picked up the coveted prize at a gala awards night in London on Thursday, November 27th.
The award is a double achievement for the family, who are celebrating a decade at The Anchor this month.
After taking over ten years ago, the Fudges wasted no time in reversing the pub’s fortunes, pumping £160,000 into a major refurbishment to restore The Anchor to its former glory.
The family’s passion for cask ale is evident; a third of the pub’s beer sales now come from cask.
The Fudges say they will not be resting on their laurels and are already planning The Anchor’s first beer festival next spring.
Trevor Fudge said: “This is a great honour and a real accolade to our brilliant staff without whom this award would not have been possible.
“We have worked incredibly hard at getting our cask ale just right and this makes all our efforts worthwhile.”
The judges were impressed by the Fudges’ meticulous care and attention to their ales, noting how staff training and regular investment in new glass washers helps to ensure the Anchor always serves the perfect pint.
“It’s a real ale gem which serves a cracking pint every time,” added Chris Jowsey, trading director at Star Pubs & Bars.
“The range, quality and presentation of the beers is superb, and it’s great to receive such enthusiastic, knowledgeable service from staff.”
