SEATON: District council will underwrite Seaton Jurassic Centre project
Thursday, 15 May 2014
East Devon District Council (EDDC) has confirmed it will underwrite Seaton Jurassic Centre funding to the tune of £165,000. As reported last week, EDDC doesn't expect to pay out the money as there is optimism regarding pending funding applications. Project partner Devon Wildlife Trust is waiting to hear if applications have been successful, but it was important to have a guarantee in place for yesterday's (Monday) Heritage Lottery Fund visit in connection with another application. EDDC's Cabinet met on May 7th and members agreed to underwrite the amount. The £4 million centre, which will be built on The Underfleet adjacent to the Seaton Tramway terminus, will tell the story of the Jurassic Coast. More than £3.5 million have been secured for the £3.7million first phase of the project, assuming a £621,000 application to Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) is successful. The second phase is estimated to cost about £321,000. The Seaton community, EDDC, Devon County Council, Seaton Town Council and Jurassic Coast World Heritage Team have worked on the project for a number of years. In 2012, Devon Wildlife Trust was appointed as operator and the centre is expected to open some point in late 2015. For more information about the project visit www.east devon.gov.uk/seatonjurassic
