Sidmouth Living with Cancer Support Group held a fundraising table top sale in St John Hall. All the money raised from the sale will go towards the £20,000 needed to run the charity each year. Founded in 2001 by Bill and Evelyn Lankester, the group’s aim is to provide help and encouragement to those affected by cancer. “We’re here to help in any way we can,” said Mr Lankester MBE. “We provide transport to hospital appointments with our own minibus, we purchase wheelchairs and help out with unexpected expenses, but we also organise days out and holidays. We help our members to enjoy life, because it can be difficult – particularly for people living on their own.” Two-years-ago Doug Millar, along with his uncle Rob, cycled from Sidmouth to Morocco to help raise money and this year he hopes to repeat his success, by cycling from John O’ Groats to Land’s End. Doug, this time with his cousin Nick, will be starting out on the 800 plus mile journey at the end of June, and all money raised will be donated to the charity. “We’re very grateful to people like Doug and Nick. With the money that they raise, along with mornings like this and other events we can continue to provide our 85 members with the support they need,” added Mr Lankester. Along with the table top sale, there was also a raffle, tea, coffee and cakes, and a “guess the bear’s name” competition. Anyone wanting to get in touch with the group can contact Bill or Evelyn via email at or by phone on 01395 577221
