SEATON: Marathon effort

Thursday, 01 May 2014

SEATON?hairdressers Adele Foxwell, pictured left, and Sue Campbell, right, competed in the London Marathon to raise funds for The Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth. The duo collected £2,303.60 in sponsorship, finishing in 4:12:50 to place them well up the ranks in a position of 14,680. They smashed their original target of £2,000 with fundraisers such as ladies’ pamper evenings, a raffle and a tombola. They were thrilled with their achievement. Adele, a veteran of many tough races including the Grizzly, survived the race despite a fall at mile six, spurred on by the thought of her three sons waiting for her at the finish line. She said: “It was such a brilliant day and we are so proud. It’s something we’ve always wanted to do. The atmosphere was amazing and it was wonderful having our family and friends there to support us. The crowds and the noise was unimaginable! “We were both elated to cross the finish line in such a great time together! We said right from the start of our training that on race day we would probably run the race individually but we were still running together at 10 miles and enjoying it, so we stuck together until the end. It made the whole experience that much more special.” She added: “We’re glad we were able to help The Donkey Sanctuary because they’re a local charity.” Dawn Vincent from The Donkey Sanctuary said: “What a brilliant time and what a fantastic achievement! We’re really grateful to people like Adele and Sue who put in so much time and effort to raise money for the sanctuary. We also thank their friends, family and local businesses for getting behind their quest to raise funds for our cause. “Their hard work means so much to us. It is what helps fund our work helping donkeys and mules in 27 countries worldwide.” As well as Sue and Adele, Theresa Harding from Essex and ‘Donkey Guy’ Pearse Stokes, from Ireland, ran the marathon for the Sanctuary in fantastic times of 4:54.00 and 3.08.00 respectively. Brilliant achievements all round!
