AXMINSTER: Minster will reopen for run up to Easter
Thursday, 03 April 2014
n BASE OF THE FIRE: Church warden Karen Wilkes and assistant church warden Jennifer Royle at the fire-damaged reading desk from 1643
THE Minster Church in Axminster is set to reopen on Palm Sunday, April 13th.
Specialist cleaners have started a three-week cleaning programme following the arson attack on Thursday March 6th.
Church warden Karen Wilkes and assistant church warden Jennifer Royle must negotiate cherry pickers and other heavy equipment as they navigate their way through the church.
Members of the community and congregation offered to help with the clean-up, but the insurance company said a specialist team was needed for a number of reasons.
Carbon deposits, for example, must be tackled in a certain way to prevent future damage. The fire was started in a reading desk, which will be restored in due course. Both Karen and Jennifer are grateful for the prompt response by police and the fire fighters, saying: "It doesn't bear thinking about the damage that could have been done had they not been so quick."
They also praised the specialist cleaners, the loss adjustor and the insurance company for their efforts.
More details about the reopening will be released nearer the time.
A police spokesperson said there have been no arrests in connection with the fire.
